Gegard Mousasi is erg druk bezig met zijn training voor het gevecht tegen Renato “Babalu” Sobral bij Affliction: Trilogy op 1 augustus en zijn gevecht tegen Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou bij DREAM 11 op 6 oktober.
Gegard Mousasi geniet van zijn vrijheid om te vechten bij zowel DREAM en Affliction. Dat is ook de reden dat Gegard Mousasi nog niet klaar is voor de UFC. Er zijn wel gesprekken geweest tussen de manager van Gegard Mousasi en matchmaker bij de UFC Joe Silva.
“My manager told me that he had spoke to Joe Silva, the matchmaker of the UFC, I think that it’s a possibility for me to fight in the UFC if I want to fight. But the UFC I think would be better for me at a later stage of my career.”
Met al 12 gevechten onverslagen is Gegard Mousasi van een onbekende kickboxer uit gegroeid tot een echte bekende MMA vechter. Door onder andere Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza, Melvin Manhoef, Dong Sik Yoon en Denis Kang te verslaan won Gegard Mousasi de DREAM Middelweight title in 2008. Nu focust Gegard Mousasi zich meer op de light heavyweight divisie om ook daar de title te winnen.
“I’ve been fighting at middleweight from the age of 18, so I didn’t let my body grow [correctly], I was walking around at 200 pounds, and I was cutting down to middleweight. But for the K-1 fight I put on weight. I didn’t want to give him any advantage. It went very fast. It was like a sponge. You give yourself a little nutrition, and you get bigger. It was the right time because of my age also. I will always fight now at 205 (pounds), and someday heavyweight.”
1 augustus vecht Gegard Mousasi voor het eerst in de light heavyweight divisie tegen Renato Sobral bij Affliction Trilogy.Het is voor het eerst dat Gegard Mousasi in Amerkia vecht waar hij naar uit kijkt omdat Mixed Martial Arts het grootst is in Amerika.
“It’s another challenge and another opportunity for me to show the people what I can do, It’s my first time in the U.S. and I’m looking forward to it. MMA is the biggest in the U.S. For me to be considered one of the best I have to prove myself in the U.S. It’s a very good opportunity for me.”
Gegard Mousasi kijkt ook uit naar gevechten met de super sterren van de UFC. Maar met de huidige organisaties ( DREAM, Affliction en M-1 ) is het niet mogelijk om een exclusief contract te krijgen bij de UFC.
“The UFC light heavyweights with Quinton Jackson, Lyoto Machida – those are the fights that I would like to fight, they are already big superstars in the UFC. But that division is stacked, so anyone would be good. You don’t have easy fights at light-heavyweight. For me, they all look like a big challenge. Some day I want to fight them, but right now I’m concentrated on other stuff.”
